DIY Gift: Tiger Bike Helmet

Sawako Furuno Helmet

Rawwr! My Tiger Helmet

A few weeks ago my sister emailed me a picture of this super cute Sawako Furuno leopard print bike helmet saying she wanted it. I looked into it and was shocked to discover it was $200. While I couldn't buy it, I told my sister it looked like something I could paint. She got super excited and asked if I could make her a tiger helmet for Christmas. I didn't give her an answer but I knew that's exactly what I would do.
The hardest part was finding the right helmet with a little brim. After trolling the internet I found great match in the GIRO Surface helmet. After lots of searching on Cyber Monday I was able to snag it for $22, a steal. Everything after that was easy.

Supplies:
-Helmet
-Orange spray paint
-White primer
-Clear Sealant
-Blue painter's tape
-Print out of tiger stripe pattern

1. I printed out an image of a tiger stripe pattern for a visual reference then using painter's tape started marking out the stripes on the helmet. I tore of the both long edges of the tape for all my stripes so that the stripes would be rough edged.

2. Cover the brim in tape. You do NOT want to paint the brim. Then stuff the air vents and head space with plastic bags and then tape over the bottom so you don't get paint inside your helmet.

3. In a well ventilated area spray the helmet with white primer, make sure to cover thoroughly. Let dry.

4. Spray the helmet with the orange paint. Let dry. Do second coat.

5. Spray with clear sealant. Let dry.

6. Carefully remove tape.

Ignore the black spot. I have no idea what that is.

P.S. Try different animal prints. I'm tempted to try the original leopard print helmet.

Easy DIY gift: Purse Strap Bracelet

Purse Strap Bracelet

Since it is the holiday season I figured I would try to come up with some more DIY gifts for those of you who love to make your gifts or might be short on $ or ideas. Today's gift took me all of 5 minutes to make and cost me $0.
Using the strap and hardware from an old broken purse I created two chic bracelets. These are the perfect rescue gifts to having lying around just in case, or to give to a trendy co-worker, friend, or family member.

Supplies:
-Old purse strap (best material is leather and pleather)
-Purse hardware to use as clasp, you can also buy this from your favorite craft/fabric store
-Matching color thread
-Sewing Machine
-Scissors

1. Starting at one end of the purse strap cut a length of strap to fit your wrist + about 2 inches for each side that you need to sew into a loop. I was lucky that my purse straps ended in the toggle claps so I only had to sew the second loop meaning I only added two inches to my bracelet length. If you have to add loops on both ends add 4 inches. You can trim off the extra.

2. Thread sewing machine and use the correct needle for the fabric you're sewing. Place either clasp or the metal ring through one end of bracelet strap. About an inch down fold the strap over with the hardware inside, creating the loop. Sew into place with two straight seams.

3. Repeat at other end if you need to. Make sure you size the loops so the finished bracelet will fit your wrist. Trim any extra material.

If you have a really long purse strap you can use this same technique to make a belt. Or you can use this process to turn an old belt into a new bracelet.

It's become one of my go-to bags and the other night I was at my bf's band's show when the lead singer's new lady friend asked me about it. After I told her I made it she asked if I could make her one. Nervous but flattered I said yes. I already had the necessary materials left over from making my bag so I knew it would be easy to make another. This time I just made a single pouch clutch, so much easier, and still had enough fabric left that I also made a little make up bag. I'm handing the bag over tonight. I hope she likes it.

I'm pretty sure we're all guilty of it. Staring at models in ads and on the cover of magazines. Dissecting their every non-existent pore. Telling ourselves or anyone who will listen to us that their images are photoshopped beyond belief. And why do we do it? Is it actually because we want to point out the lies being fed to us? Maybe. Or because we have been taught to be jealous and threatened by anyone we perceive as better than us? Possibly. Is it because it feels good? Could be. I know I feel a little better about myself when I can tell myself that none of it is real, and no one is that pretty. Really, it's probably a combination of all these things and more.

Well, now image forensics researchers at Dartmouth have developed a mathematical model that traces photoshop alterations. They applied the model to several ads and magazine covers and hope to use the findings to study the affect such images have on the psyche. This model isn't available for public use but if it was would you use it? Why?

Sometimes it can be very hard to feel inspired. You're tired, stressed, burned out. Really you just don't want to bother with the creative process at all whether it's at work, your style, etc. Then something grabs your attention and you realize inspiration is necessary to expanding upon your work and ideas, to moving forward and creating. When you fail to acknowledge inspiration you fail to acknowledge yourself. Of course, you might not agree with me but take a minute to think about a time when you were tired or bored with the way things were in your life. How did you feel? What was your energy level like? What got you moving again? I'm pretty sure it was inspiration. Appreciate what life offers to you and feed your talents with it.

I try not to watch a lot of TV. I'm one of those people who if I sit down in front of the TV will suddenly snap out of a daze three hours later to realized I've been watching House Hunter International reruns for no apparent reason. Instead, I monitor my TV time by watching my shows online. This way I miss most of the commercials, set myself with an actual time limit, and can work on jewelry or other projects as the show plays. All that being said I'm still a TV lover and am so glad some good scripted shows have made it onto the air in the past few seasons. These are my current favorites:

1. Modern Family- So freaking funny. I laugh out loud every episode

2. Parks and Rec- Ron Swanson. The end.

3. Pan Am- Was resistant to it and the idea that it was a cheap shot at my beloved Mad Men, but I'm really enjoying it now.

4. Mad Men- Can it please come back?

5. 30 Rock- This needs to come back too. I need more Alec Baldwin in my life.

6. Community- Decided to check it out one night, and was left feeling uncertain but wanting to watch more. I still feel this way

7. Parenthood- Don't know why I like this show but I do.

8. Project Accessory- Really didn't think I would like this based on the cheesy previews, and I think Molly Sims is a bland host, but I love the challenges and am jealous of their amazing work room.

9. Project Runway- It's been losing it's appeal but I still like to watch the runway shows and be a judgmental bitch.

So there's my list of shows. I guess if it says anything about me it's that I enjoy creative projects, am nostalgic for a period I didn't live through, find happiness in sarcasm, and value family life, or I just watch a lot of TV. What shows do you like?

How could this face ever be in the evil mouse army?

This past weekend was interesting. Saturday was cloudy and rainy and filled with movies, dance classes, homemade soup, and The Nutcracker rehearsal and Sunday was the day I realized I'm no longer a teenager and my body is done trying to pretend it is.

She's also an angel. The duality is quite fitting

The day started off with beautiful weather and me excited about a trip to Magic Mountain. My bf's dad invited us and since I hadn't been to Magic Mountain in about 10 years I nervous but ready to ride some crazy coasters. We started off strong on X2, the absolute most insane roller coaster I've ever been on, Revolution, and Tatsu, another death defying feat of engineering. They were crazy, thrilling, and scream inducing but after just three rides I was out.

Tatsu. Yes, you free fall head first while you pray that your harness holds.

My head was throbbing, my stomach was in my throat, and I just wanted to take a nap somewhere nice and quiet, which is impossible at Six Flags. Instead, I popped Advil, continued to feel terrible, and followed the group from ride to ride to sit out on the sidelines and feel like the ultimate party pooper. In my mind all I could think was "Who are you? You've never been the girl who sits out with a headache. Pull yourself together and rally." Then I realized "Oh yeah it's been 10 years since you've done this and your body has changed a hell of a lot. Remember, you can't even read in the car any longer without getting a headache. What did you expect riding a bunch of head jerking roller coasters back to back? A relaxing head massage?" I did manage to rally for Collossus, one of my absolute favorites, laughing and screaming the whole ride, but after that I really was done. All I could think about was the long car ride home and how I didn't want to puke in the car. The car ride was marked by a nap. Yep, I was able to pass out at 3:30 in the afternoon and you know what? That was fine with me.

Even with the headache and nausea I had a fun time because I enjoyed what I was able to and I realized that I'm more than alright with no longer trying to keep up with teenagers. They will always be younger and more energetic but they will never have the level head and self-acceptance that I have. As my grandma always says "Age is just a number, it's your state of mind that matters." Besides, I'm too busy to worry about competing with the youth. Not only do I have a family, job, and social life to balance but I've got to focus on bigger battles now, like the fact that I slowly seem to be metamorphosing into my mom.

DIY Studded Ponytail Holder from Repurposed Belt

It's currently raining here, and what better excuse for some DIY time than a rainy day. I completed this ponytail holder in about 5 minutes last night. My bf had asked me to cut up his old studded belt to make some bracelets for him. After I did this I was left with a little strip of studs that I didn't want to waste. This project was the perfect use for it.

Supplies:
-small studded strip of leather
-thin black piece of elastic
-strong hold glue
-small flat nose pliers

1. Cut strip of studs so when you wrap it around your ponytail there is about an inch of open space. Cut right next to the studs so that the tabs are right on the edge.

2. Cut elastic to fill empty space to fit your ponytail with extra space to attach elastic to each end of the studded strip.

3. Open the end tab on each end stud. Peel back bottom layer of leather strip to about each stud's midpoint. Add glue between leather layers and sandwich ends of elastic in between. Pierce stud's open tab into the elastic (is key to keeping elastic in place). Close tab with pliers. Clamp down edge until glue dries.

4. There isn't a whole lot of stretch in this ponytail holder so you will have to use a regular elastic tie in your hair then slide this over your hair. It will stay in place and add a little interest to your basic hair style.

Mod inspired DIY Bold Collar Necklace

I have a slight obsession with classic films and British period dramas meaning my Netflix queues are full of them. On any given night you will probably find me winding down for bed by randomly selecting a movie from my watch instantly queue. A few weeks ago I decided on "The Grass is Greener" starring Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr. While I wasn't in love with the film (laughing away infidelity isn't my thing) I was in love with Jean Simmons bold style. Particularly in one scene where she wears an all orange outfit with matching orange necklace and earrings, one of which sits as a crown jewel in her bouffant. I decided I needed a necklace like that to call my own and what better way to get one than to make it myself.

She's crazy and fabulous!

The complete ensemble

Supplies:
-Several brooches, rhinestones, odds and ends from broken pieces of jewelry, nothing has to match
-Strong adhesive made for metals and plastics
-Spray paint
-Backing strong and soft to handle the weight of the jewels and movement. I used embrodiery cloth because I had it on hand, but now I have to layer it with something else because its so scratchy
-A clasp

1. Cut out a circle from a piece of paper. It will be your guide for the inner circumference of your necklace. To get mine I traced the inner part of a collar necklace that had the same fit I wanted with this new piece.

2. Lay your backing down and position the circle on top of it so that there is enough room to add all your pieces. Position everything in a way you like then use the glue to join each piece to the backing. I had to redo this because I forgot the backing the first time.

3. Cut away the extra backing.

4. Make sure everything is solidly attached and spray paint the whole thing. It might take a few coats. Finish off with a sealer so the paint doesn't nick or chip.

5. When dry and the clasp and viola! You now are ready to rock an amazing one of a kind necklace.

Of course its only right to pair it with an outfit the same color.

Trick or Treat Bag D.I.Y

Her scary sailor look

Bell's is dressing as a sailor girl this Halloween. I tried to encourage being a prima ballerina and wearing the very expensive costume I had to buy for her to wear once for her recital, but she would not be budged. Oh well, I'll wait to fight my battles once we have to start dealing with the slutty teenage outfits (seriously is anyone else creeped out by the 12 year old in thigh highs, heels, mini skirt, and choker staring out at you from the packaging?). Anyway, we were talking about trick or treating one day and asked what she would use for her bucket. Usually, I hand her a sheet and say go have fun, but her sailor costume got me thinking that I could make her a little sailor sack to carry her candy haul. It was super simple to make and I feel like the decorations could be changed to compliment all types of Halloween costumes.

Taking the tote out for a spin

Supplies:
Canvas tote
Markers
Print outs for stencils
Eyelets
Pliers
Rope

Directions:
1. Cut off handles of tote bag. Stencil and color in designs on bags.

2. Mark placement of eyelets at top of bag. Cut out holes for eyelet centers. Attach eyelets with pliers.

3. Thread rope through eyelets, tie at ends to make handle, and you're done.

This Ain't Stouffers: Great Grandma's Lasagna Bolognese Recipe

One of my all time favorite foods is my great grandma's lasagna bolognese recipe. Besides being delicious I love this recipe because of it's family history and the fact that it is such a labor of love to make. Now it's not incredibly complicated but it does take time and patience to make, but at first bite you'll understand why it's worth it. This is authentic lasagna that fed Sicilian ranchers, mafia (my great great uncle is Joseph Ardizzone), and movie stars. I hope you enjoy it as much as my family and I do.

F.Y.I. You won't find Ricotta in this recipe, but that's for the better. Trust me.

Ingredients:

-1 lb lasagna noodles

-1 lb Mozzarella cheese, grated

-1/2 c. freshly grated Parmesan cheese

Meat Sauce

-1 c. chopped onion -1 clove garlic minced -1/2 c. chopped celery -2 Tbs butter

-1 lb mild Italian sausage -1 lb ground beef -2 Tbs olive oil -1/2 c. dry white wine

-2 c. chopped tomatoes, peeled/seeded -3 Tbs tomato paste -2 c. beef stock -1 bay leaf

-1/2 tsp sugar -1/2 tsp dried oregano -1/8 tsp allspice -salt and pepper to taste

Besciamella (Bechamel)

-3 Tbs butter -6 Tbs flour -2 c. milk -1 c. heavy cream -1 tsp salt -dash nutmeg

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Butter a 9x13" baking dish. Cook lasagna according to package. Drain and cover with cold water. Then lift out strips and let dry on paper towels.

Meat Sauce- Combine onion, garlic, and celery. Saute over low heat in 2 Tbs butter until golden, 8-10 minutes, stirring frequently. Remove to a heavy 3-4 quart saucepan. In same fry pan saute sausage and beef in olive oil until lightly browned. Stir to break up lumps. Remove excess grease. Add wine to meat. Boil, stirring constantly, until almost evaporated. Add meat to saucepan and add tomatoes, tomato paste, stock, and seasonings. Simmer, partially covered, for 1 hour stirring occasionally.

Besciamella- Melt 3 Tbs butter in heavy 2-3 quart saucepan, over low heat. Stir in flour and cook slowly 2-3 minutes, stirring constantly. Pour in milk and cream slowly, stirring with a whisk to obtain a smooth sauce. Heat to boiling, stirring constantly, until sauce thickens. Remove from heat and add 1 tsp salt and nutmeg. Set aside.

Assemble- Spread 1/3 of meat sauce onto bottom of baking dish. Cover with 1/3 of noodles. Make sure noodle edges overlap. Spread 1/3 of besciamella over noodles, making sure to cover noodles. Top with 1/3 of mozzarella. Repeat 2 more times. Sprinkle grated Parmesan on top and bake until bubbly, about 30 minutes. Serve immediately or cool and freeze for a later day.

Photobomb in the old neighborhood

I got back from NY a week ago and just have been too lazy to post anything since. I had a great time catching up with friends and family in the city and exploring places I had never been before, like the NY Botanical Gardens (seriously check it out). The weather was great and I was happily surprised by how much I liked Brooklyn. When I went to school in Manhattan I went to BK maybe 2-3 times for parties and dinners, so I wasn't really sure what to expect, other than lots of hipsters. What I learned is that I really liked Brooklyn (or at least parts of it) and for the first time felt like it wouldn't be completely insane to move out to New York with my daughter. Not that that's even a plan but before this trip I was adamant against raising my kid(s) in the city. Brooklyn made me feel like family life would be attainable in New York. I also really loved all the great little stores, restaurants, and gorgeous homes scattered around the borough. All in all it was a great trip and I'm so happy that I got to go back. I promised my friends to make it a priority to come out every other year. I look forward to keeping that promise.

New York's Alright if You Like Saxophones

I'm so excited! After a five year absence(too long) I'm finally heading back to NY for a long weekend to meet up with my old roomie and my sister. I left NY much sooner than I ever anticipated, and while I always planned on moving back to CA I was definitely bummed about not reaching alumni status at the university I spent three years at (I'm a Chapman alum) and starting my "adult life" out there. Life is full of crazy loops and turns and you never know what's around the next corner but you gotta just keeping rolling. While my life has been turned upside down more than a few times over the last couple years, I'm always excited to see what lies ahead because it could be something fantastic like meeting up with great friends in a city I love.

P.S. I like saxophones. I actually took sax lessons for a few months when I was in 4th grade.

A Touch of Lace- turn a boring dress into a lacy top

Original Dress.

New top paired with black tank, jean shorts, and necklace I made.

I found this dress/tunic on sale for $5 the other day and while the shape didn't do anything for me I really liked the sleeves and thought it would be worth buying and experimenting with. I cut most of the fabric off, gave it a slight mullet hemline, added a lace panel to the back, and Done! Now I have a cute little sweater top that I can throw on with a pair of shorts or jeans as the weather cools down.

How to add a lace overlay

Supplies:

-dress or top

-piece of lace slightly larger than size you want it

-sewing machine

-pins

-scissors

1. After I cut my top to the length I wanted I laid it flat and decided where I wanted to place the overlay. I then pinned it down

2. I sewed around the edge of the lace with a zig zag stitch.

3. Lastly, I cut out dress fabric behind the lace and trimmed the excess lace from the sides.

DIY Minaudiere

A few months ago I came across a blog post (before I used pinterest so I can't recall the name) about turning a discarded sunglasses case into a clutch. I thought this was a clever idea and knowing I was going to be in two weddings over the summer I thought it would be a great inexpensive way to add some sparkle to my look. I received lots of compliments and everyone was surprised to learn the bag had been a sunglasses case. This is a great DIY because it doesn't take much skill or money, just a little creativity. Now go rummage through your junk draws to find a case and try this yourself.

Supplies needed:

- 1 hard sunglasses case (make sure it's large enough to hold a night out's necessary items.
-spray paint
-decorative findings
-strong glue

1. Spray paint the case to help camouflage it
2. After paint has dried. Glue on fake closure if you want. I painted a large green plastic pyramid bead to look like a purse snap.

3.Working in small areas, spread glue and place findings.
4. Repeat step 3 until the case is covered. Make sure that you leave space around the edges so case can close.

This does take a little bit of time if you are working with small findings, and I'm not going to lie that I definitely lost a few brain cells from sniffing so much glue, but it was still fun.

Well, actually I didn't get a t-shirt, but I'm ok with that because I ended up with these beautiful beaded bracelets and necklace that are completely on trend right now.

These pieces were made by local women my parents met while they toured around Cameroon, Rwanda, and Kenya for 17 days this month. Yep, my parents said Sayonara Sucker to me and took off on the trip of a lifetime. Actually, I'm really happy that they got to take such an amazing trip. They've been trying to organize one for the last few years, but the timing was always off. Then my sister decided to spend the summer in Cameroon interning for a human rights law group and LIGHTBULB! my parents decided it would be a great idea to visit her. When they came home my mom had almost 2000 photos on her camera. Here are some of my favorites:

Last Days of Summer

Already thinking it's Fall. I was in a tank top and felt fine.

Lately, it feels like everyone's done with Summer and onto Fall already, like Summer is so passe. Fortunately, Summer didn't get the memo. While the East Coast dealt with Hurricane/Tropical Storm Irene we were dealing with a heat wave and high levels of humidity. Luckily, we were able to escape to Huntington Beach, aka Surf City USA, for the weekend where temps were at least 20 degrees cooler.

B has a slight unknown fear of the ocean (not a healthy respect) and fights me everytime I suggest going down to the beach. This always bums me out because I love the beach and spent most of my childhood summers in the water or on the sand with friends and family, and I want her to have the same great experiences I did. This time she had no choice and I dragged her to the boardwalk, where surprise surprise she decided she wanted to take off her shoes and play in the sand. The next few hours we spent looking for shells, building sand piles, and running in and out of the water. It was so much fun and a huge success in getting her to like the beach and build up her courage. I hope to have many more of these days, and luckily with our climate it's possible to enjoy the beach throughout the year. Who knows maybe in a few more years I'll even be able to get her out on a long board.

While cleaning out his storage unit my boyfriend found an old radio in its case and thought that I would have fun repurposing the leather box (he knows me so well). Obviously, the case was already a great little purse it just needed to be cleaned up and updated. Using some scrap lace and brassy pyramid stud stickers I had lying around I was able to take this bag from relic to rockstar, all for the grand total of $0. Here's how.

Nice shape and color, just really boring.

Supplies:
Fabric scissors
Liquid Stitch glue (one of my favorite finds in the last year)
Fabric pen
Scrap fabric about 1 1/2 x 4" (should be durable/double layered)
Embellishments (I found these at Michael's in the $1 bin awhile ago. I just remove the foam backing to use)

1. This bag opens like a lunch box with the flap ending in a 90 degree angle. Since I wanted to use it as a purse and not have everything spill out when opened I decided to add fabric sides that would limit how far the flap opened. With this type of leather I wasn't able to sew on the fabric so I used Liquid Stitch to add the fabric. I opened the bag to the angle I wanted it to rest at making sure I could easily access anything inside, placed the fabric inside, marked the angle the fabric needed to be cut at for the flap, and cut it.

2. Glue fabric in place place. I gave it about a 1/4" lip on the bottom of the bag and glued the fabric to the whole side of the main part of the bag, but only used glue on a small strip on the flap. The flap has a lip that overlaps the body of the bag when closed and if I glued fabric to the whole lip it would have made the bag awkward to close.

3. While that dried I removed the sticker backings from my studs and laid out the design I wanted. It ended up that a random scattering of studs looked the best. I think it contrasts well with the classic conservative shape and look of the bag.

4. Glue down studs. I used Liquid Stitch again because I was out of Super Glue, but I'm not sure how well the studs will hold up with it. I like that LS doesn't mark up leather but I might have to use a stronger multi-purpose adhesive because of the studs.

Done! Now I have a fun little bag that holds all my necessities and will transition well through the seasons.

School, school, don't be late...

Summer has flown by and B has started school again. She's in the first grade, an official elementary school student, and she couldn't be more excited. As she's my only child the whole school thing has been a learning experience for me as well. I went to private school my whole life and I'm new to the public school system and how it works. Having recently watched and cried my way through Waiting for Superman I'm very worried about her academic future, but extremely thankful for the quality of our local school. I love that we can walk to school and friends are in the neighborhood. I'm lucky that our school is highly rated and the faculty and staff are greatly involved in the success of the children. I'm upset by all the furlough days and every Wednesday being a half day. Lastly, I'm confused by these combo classes. B's in a 1st/2nd combo class which I've been told means she's one of the top performers in her class, but I'm still not sold on the idea. If it's the top 1st graders and bottom 2nd graders will the teacher really be able to keep the class engaged and everyone on track for the next year? I would love to know if anyone else has had experience with this.

I can't believe I just quoted PH. Its so true though. I'm a pretty simple girl who prefers dressing solid neutrals and an animal print here or there, but for some reason I'm always drawn to anything that shines and glitters. It's definitely in my veins. Anyway here's another simple cheap/free DIY project for those who like to shine. I got the idea after seeing Miu Miu's new Fall '11 glitter sunglasses. A few days later I was in Target and saw sunnies in the $1 bin so I knew it was just something I had to try. Miu Miu's pair puts mine to shame but they're so wild they make me smile. I can't wait to wear them around my daughter. She'll either want her own pair or be totally embarrassed.

Glitter Glasses

-1 pair plastic sunglasses
-1 tube glitter (I used large glitter because that's what I had but I think fine glitter would help bring the look down a notch)
-modge podge
-sponge brush
-a wide type of tape like duct or masking

1. Cut 4 pieces of tape to fit each side of each lens. Cover the lens with tape.

2. On a well covered surface wipe modge podge onto one arm of sunglasses.

3. Over a paper plate sprinkle glitter over whole arm. Make sure it gets covered. Let dry.

4. Repeat process for other arm and frame. I left the bridge uncovered because I didn't want the glitter bugging my nose.

5. Touch up areas where the glitter didn't stick. Let dry.

7. Cover all glittered areas in a layer of modge podge. This will seal in the glitter which is crucial if you don't want to glitter to fall into your eye and scratch a cornea or something. Not fun.

I grabbed these black mary janes from F21 last year after seeing them on another blogger and thinking they looked super cute. Well, they have basically sat in my closet since then. I think I've worn them twice because they usually look slightly off with my outfits. Anyway, I've been on a huge craft kick lately and having contemplated jazzing these shoes up for a long time I decided it was now or never. Their separate platform and chunky heel were ideal for a bright color blocking paint job. I chose to use craft paint colors I already had that played off the brights/neon trends and that I knew would work together having seen my mom rock this color combo through most of the 90s. After finishing the shoes I realized I must have subconsciously been inspired by the pretty Prada dress that has graced the likes of actress Hailee Steinfeld and the amazing blogger, Wendy B.

Supplies
-2 colors craft paint
-clear shiny top coat craft paint
-nice paintbrush (badly made brushes leave bristles everywhere which will ruin your paint job)
-painter's tape
-razor blade or exacto knife

1. Tape of areas to be painted.

2. Paint base coats. The heel base coat will actually be the color of the smaller top stripe. This will take some time and patience. You will have to paint multiple layers, and trust me when I say the quickest way to do this is to wait for each layer to dry before you paint another one. I always try to just glob on paint and it never works.

3. Once the heel and platform are covered and dry measure off how big you want your heel stripe to be, mark it off, then tape it off placing the tape over the stripe color.

4. Paint the heel.

5. Use razor blade to help remove tape and keep clean lines. Scrape any excess paint off.

6. Paint the heel and platform with a coat of the shiny top coat.

Claire Vivier Inspired DIY Envelope Clutch

After spotting this Claire Vivier la pochette I was inspired to make this extremely simple envelope clutch for my sister for her birthday. It took only an afternoon to complete and I'm happy with the results, and I think she will be too.

Supplies
-Pleather, or real leather. I scored my pleather for $3. It was a yard remnant at a local upholstery fabric store.
-Strong thread in matching, or contrasting color
-Exacto knife
-paper envelope (I used a legal sized one since it was closer to the size of my clutch)
-ruler
-fabric marker
-button, or other closure

1. Measure and mark out a rectangle, size is up to you. Remember you will basically be creating a tri-fold so make sure your rectangle is long enough. Cut out the rectangle.
-What makes upholstery pleather easy to work with is that it is sturdy an already lined meaning you don't have to worry about measuring, cutting, and sewing another piece of fabric.

2. Keeping about 3/8" from all 3 edges sew a straight line widthwise across one end of your fabric. This will be the top of the front panel of you clutch.

2. Take the sewn edge and so that it is inside out fold it up about a 1/3 of the way lengthwise to create the clutch pouch. Make sure it's deep enough to hold items you will be carrying in it. Pin in place. If you are using real leather you can sew on the topside of the leather so the seam will show like Claire's bag and you won't have any hang over on the flap.

3. Place the envelope on the unpinned part of the fabric, this will be the flap. Your clutch might be wider than the envelope, that's ok just line them up in the middle.

4. Trace and cut. My clutch was wider than the envelope so I just used a ruler to continue the lines to the end of my fabric.

5. Sew. Make sure the flap is pleather side up when placed under the sewing machine. Starting at one lower end of the clutch sew up the side, around the edges of the flap and back down the other side.

6. Turn clutch right side out. Fold flap over pouch(sorry for these very technical terms, I couldn't think of any others). Use Exacto-knife to puncture the flap where the button will come through. Then while flap is still in place use marker to dot button placement through the hole you just created.

7. Sew the button on by hand and then use scissors to increase the opening's size to fit the button. I made my opening in a cross shape so the pleather would hug the button.
-I'm thinking I will probably reinforce the opening since pleather stretches easily.

8. Enjoy your new Envelope Clutch.

Cut Out Shoulder Blouse DIY

Did this super easy DIY yesterday after seeing it on several girls over the last few months and thinking it was cute. I used A Pair & A Spare's tutorial for reference, but it's so easy you can just go for it.

Supplies
-a shirt
-fabric scissors
-fabric pen/marking utensil that won't run your top
-pins
-a piece of paper to create stencil
-a ruler (not necessary but helpful)

1. Choose a blouse. Since this was my first time I used a shirt I liked but that was really cheap, so I wouldn't mind so much if I ruined it.

It had passants so I had to make sure my cut outs were longer than them.

2. Make a stencil the size of your cut out. It should be an oval.

My cutouts were small about 4x4.5"

3. Pin the stencil exactly where you want your cutouts. Trace. Cut.

4. Try on shirt to make sure you like size/placement of cutouts. If you aren't sure how large you want your holes to be start small, try on the shirt, and then cut them larger if you want. Once you cut you can't go back.

5. Pin and sew down raw edges. I just hand stitched them but you can use a sewing machine.

6. And you're done. You are now the owner of a sexy little shirt that will be a great transition piece to wear from Summer into Autumn, and Winter if you live in warmer climates.

Booze and Brides

The last month has been a whirlwind of wine, wives, and white for me. I was in two friends weddings just two weeks apart and before, during, and in between squeezed in two showers, two wine tour bachelorette parties, and two fabulous weddings for friends I love dearly. One bride I've known for 20 years. Considering I'll be 27 in two weeks that's a long f'ing time. The other I've been friends with for just about 13 years. Obviously, I'm all about keeping old friends around. Both brides went for a more earthy D.I.Y vibe. One surrounded by water (fitting when marrying an ex-Navy man) and the other surrounded by green overgrown gardens (perfect for a neo-hippie with a love for vintage). Being a D.I.Y enthusiast I was blown away by all the homemade and personal touches and involvement of family and friends so I felt like sharing images from these special occasions that had been consuming all my free time.

I got some grey platform booties at F21 several months ago and have happily worn them many times. Recently, I saw a photo featuring them and I all I could think was "WTF...When did I start wearing grandma shoes?". Although, I was less than pleased with than my booties' latest performance I just wasn't ready to give up on the poor soles (horrible pun intended). Instead I decided to whip out the big guns, aka my brains, and try to find a way to save them. A little imagination, a little glue, and 10 minutes was all I needed.

DIY Gifts

Every year I have the problem of figuring out what to get my mom for Mother's Day, birthday, Christmas, etc. I'm sure I'm not the only one who deals with this. Sometimes she has a suggestion but more often than not she just says "You don't have to get me anything, just spending the day with my family is enough." Maddening! So as Mother's Day approached and I started to stress my mom actually unknowingly provided me with an idea when she mentioned how much she loved these pretty Moroccan inspired lanterns. With a very restricted budget (summer camp fees and upcoming weddings killed me this month) I could not afford two lanterns, and getting one just seemed odd, but then I spotted these small table top lanterns at Target a few days later and decided to make my own.

Great look and size but not the right color

A coat of gold spray paint and a coat of hammered metal spray paint and they were good to go. I wanted to add a patina to these to make them more like the original but I ran out of time so I might have to steal them back to complete the look.

My mom's also a framed photo fanatic so I bought a simple white frame, inked on a Miu Miu inspired bird pattern I found online and have been dying to use, added a family photo, and presented it to her as another Mother's day gift.

The gifts were a hit especially once my mom noticed that the birds were my personal touch. While none of these items cost a lot of money they were special and valuable to my mom because they created a shared experience between us in that I was thinking of her when I made these gifts and she will think of me when she looks at them. I see that as a win win on both sides.

My mom and me

Let me just say Happy Mother's Day to all the lovely mommas out there. I meant to actually post on Sunday but between helping my mom put on a brunch and dealing with my own mommy duties I barely had time to eat that day let alone blog. I even had grand intentions of writing a loving post dedicated to my mom and I had a very specific beautiful photo of my mother I wanted to use. Well that photo seems to have disappeared but I managed to find another one that I love.

In it my mom and I are holding hands walking down the stairs probably headed to a much needed nap from the looks of it. In the photo I'm the adorable shirtless 22 mo. old and my mom is the a very pregnant 26 year old married homemaker. Now I'm 26, single, working, and the momma of one little girl. It's strange to look at this old photo and think about how different our lives our at the same age yet still connected by our shared experience of young motherhood. I was 20 when I had my daughter and my mom was 18 when she gave birth to the first of her three children. I think it is my personal triumphs and struggles of not only motherhood, but young motherhood, that have helped me connect with her and understand her in a way I was incapable of in the past.

We still have our ups and downs and my parenting style is different then her's but she is my rock and the confidant I can turn to when I feel like I'm doing everything wrong who listens, smiles, then tells me she thinks I'm doing an amazing job and that she wishes she had some of my mothering skills. Coming from a woman who spent a good part of her life dedicated to raising her children I count this as the highest compliment I could receive and a great help in relieving my mother guilt. More valuable than any compliments though is the strong example and unlimited love she has provided over the years that have taught me what it means to be a good mom.

Cinco de Mayo

Cinco de Mayo is over and my plan to share a delicious recipe to include in your dinner tonight has failed. Oh well. I'm posting the recipe anyway because it is simple and delicious and you really don't need a holiday to enjoy it.

This is a recipe for Mexican Red Rice. Yes, Mexican, not Spanish. I have been enjoying this rice my whole life and I plan to keep enjoying it until I can no longer chew solid food. Ironically it comes via my mom, la gringa. It's supremacy over my Grammie's recipe was hard for my dad's family to admit at first because doing so was almost a betrayal of their mother and her amazing talent in the kitchen. Then they got over it because as we all know if food is good, it's good, no matter who makes it. So enjoy this super simple recipe and share it with your friends/family because food always tastes better when prepared with love.

Mexican Red Rice

8-10 servings

From Mexican Family Cooking

(Highly recommend this cookbook for multiple great recipes)

1/4 c oil

2 c long grain rice

4 c chicken stock

3 garlic cloves, mashed

1/2 onion in thick slices

1/2 c canned tomato sauce

Salt and pepper

1 cup frozen peas and carrots, parboiled in salted water 1 minute and drained (I just cook them in the microwave)

Heat oil in deep saucepan and saute the rice until golden. Add chicken stock, garlic, onion, and tomato sauce. Season with salt and pepper. Bring to a boil; lower the heat, cover, and cook until almost all liquid has been absorbed. Uncover, fold in the peas and carrots carefully, cover again, and cook until all liquid has been absorbed.

Serve with some carne asada or just eat it straight out of the pot by itself. Trust me you'll want to.

Osama bin Laden is Dead

The US government has announced that Osama bin Laden is dead and that they are in custody of the body. When I first saw mention of it on FB I was shocked and skeptical, that maybe it was just internet gossip. After quickly verifying the news on CNN.com I must say I don't know what to say.

Like most Americans I remember exactly where I was when the planes hit the World Trade Center, at an early morning screening for a clinical study on asthma. When I heard the news on the radio I couldn't even digest it. World changing events like that have always been difficult for me to grasp. I see the images, I hear the words, and yet my body and mind are frozen trying to process and react to it all.

To me it is hands down the hardest change to accept about becoming an adult. The world is no longer just a word referring abstractly to everything/everyone/every place outside of your own sphere of existence. You become part of it all whether you're willing participant or not. The issues in the paper, on TV, on the radio, and argued over in D.C. and City Hall become your issues. You can't hide from what happens in this world. Sure you can hide under the covers just like when you were a kid but the boogeyman no longer disappears in the morning light.

Osama was just one of the many boogeymen running rampant through our thoughts and fears and in the blink of an eye he was caught. So what do I think? How do I react? I'm relieved that he is dead, that the man hunt is over, and that no troops were hurt in the operation but I'm also very wary of a dead man. Some dead men wield more might and power than they held in life and I'm afraid that Osama might be one of these men. Will a bigger more frightening boogeyman emerge from all this? I want to check under the bed and in the closet to see if he is gone but I'm afraid of what I might find.

Springtime Nails

I just had to get these Sally Hansen Nail Polish Strips I spotted while rushing through Target grabbing candy for a egg hunt I'm in charge of this Sunday. Usually my local target only has bright neon yellow strips in stock, but somehow I lucked out and had a variety of options to choose from. While the leopard were really calling my name I ultimately decided on the flower power design because it was perfect for Spring, Earth Day, and Easter. I have tried other nail polish strips before and I definitely prefer Sally Hansen's. They were super easy to apply, secured to my nails well, and I can't feel them whereas my previous pair felt like I was wearing strips of tape on my nails. These are supposed to last up to 10 days but with all the work I do with my fingers I'll be happy if they last five. At around $8 a package, which includes enough strips for at least two applications, these nail polish strips are worth a try if you're looking for an easy inexpensive way to add a little fun to your look.

DIY Proenza Schouler Rope Necklace

The Proenza Schouler rope necklaces and bracelets are playful and a great pop of color for Spring and Summer but as the necklace costs $650 most people, myself included, are unwilling/unable to spend that kind of money of such a trendy piece of jewelry. Although I couldn't plunk down that kind of cash I knew I would be able to make it and for much less. I guess many people felt the same way, as I have seen several PS inspired DIY projects popping up all over the Internet. Most of them I've found have been bracelets and that's probably because they are much faster to make. I went for the necklace which was simple to put together but took several hours of braiding and wrapping to complete. I suggest doing such things while watching TV or Netflix so you don't go crazy or cross eyed. I'm happy with how my necklace turned out and even happier that it only cost me about $10. If you like doing doing busy work while watching TV and are a fan of the necklace I say give the DIY version a shot. You'll score a great Spring/Summer accessory with just a little patience.

Items Needed

1. Two colors of rope

-length depends on how long you want your necklace the real PS goes down past the model's waist. I made mine shorter as that length doesn't work very well with my chest size

2. six pre-drilled stones

3. six head pins to string the stones onto the necklace

4. at least 4 colors of thread multiple ft (make sure it's thick and durable like quilting on embroidery thread)

5. 1 zipper pull (mine was taken from a broken zipper on an old sweatshirt)

Pairing this necklace with a casual outfit quickly adds some style to your look

I think the directions can be figured out just by looking at the photo of the PS necklace but if you would like me to post them just let me know.

Quick Trip Down the Coast

As I said earlier the last few weeks have been very hectic for me. Finally, I got some relief on Thursday when I sent B off to Texas to spend the last few days of Spring Break with her dad and his family. I was supposed to have a small showing at my old office that day but it was rescheduled last minute due to an emergency meeting that several of the girls had to attend. Normally I would be bummed but instead I felt relief that I had a little more time to spend on my pieces and excitement because I was now able to leave for Coronado sooner. See, my mom decided to surprise my boyfriend and me with an overnight trip to Coronado, which is a beautiful island in SD that I often visited as a young girl. Let me just say it was exactly what I needed.

The weather was beautiful, the island was peaceful, and most importantly I was able to relax. We made it down to the island in about 90 minutes and after checking in to the historic Glorietta Bay Inn we immediately decompressed with some drinks and some lounging by the pool. When we finally decided to move our butts we headed across the street to stroll the boardwalk by the famous/haunted Hotel Del Coronado and watch the sunset. After the sun disappeared we walked into town for some tasty pizza at the Village Pizzeria. We finished the night with some drinks on our patio overlooking the Hotel Del. The next day was spent eating a leisurely breakfast and taking another stroll around the island. We left the island that afternoon and made it home in 1 hour! Seriously, that has to be some kind of record. I usually can't even make it to my friend's place in Del Mar in that time.

While the trip was short I feel that I made the most of it by doing absolutely nothing. I came back refreshed and ready to jump back into work and mommy duty. If you are ever in So Cal and are tired of LA or SD I would really recommend driving over the bridge to Coronado for a few hours or even a few days. It's a beautiful little city with a great beach, some beautiful historic landmarks, and a relaxed vibe that will immediately mellow you out.

Doing Work

Sorry, I've been MIA for over a week now. There are just not enough hours in the day to juggle everything I'm doing unfortunately. The last few weeks I've been spending all my spare time (aka the late hours of the night) creating jewelry pieces for a small viewing I'm doing on Thursday and entertaining my daughter who is a little more than half way through her two week spring break (please God send a shower of money down so schools can stop taking furlough days). As a result my blogging time has been cut to nothing, really I haven't even had more than a few minutes to try and catch up on the blogs I usually follow religiously. The only reason I'm posting now is to let people know I'm still here so please don't leave me. Seriously. I don't take abandonment well. After this weekend I should be on a better schedule but in the meantime check out some of the items I've been working on.

Chillin with the girls

My body aches, my fingers are sore, my brain is mush, and my eyes are burning. No, I'm not sick, I've just been playing Barbies with B for the last few hours. Sitting on the floor, hunched over a pile of plastic dolls trying to fit their ginormous hips and boobs into pieces of fabric no more that an inch wide will do that to a full grown woman. Don't get me wrong. I love playing with B and its fun having an excuse to play with the toys I loved as child, but at the end of playtime its all too obvious I've aged well beyond my 26 years. When we finally stopped playing all I wanted to do was nap. B just wanted to move onto a new game.

As any girl who has played with Barbies knows the best part is dressing them up. Most of my Barbie memories involve dolls in different states of undress patiently waiting for me to finish styling them for whatever activity awaited them (usually a Jeep ride and meal with GI Joe). I'm actually in awe that my sister and I didn't all grow up to be 80s hair band groupies, having spent years under the influence of Barbie's blue eyeshadow, pink lipstick, crop tops, and mini skirts. Rest assured Barbie has maintained her iconically inappropriate style all while shedding her corporate conservative pumps for sexy new footwear. I covet several of the colored plastic shoes currently strewn about B's Barbie house. Not sure when Barbie started sporting stylish shoes, maybe Christian Louboutin's collection was the catalyst, but I'm glad it happened. I mean if a plastic dolls is going to inspire a love of ridiculously high heels in my daughter she should at least do it wearing shoes I wouldn't mind sitting in my closet.

My love of Barbie's shoes has me thinking about giving this site a try so I can make my own Barbie inspired heels. What do you think? Would you rock a pair of Barbie's shoes?

DIY Skull Fringe Earrings

I first spotted these amazing Iosselliani earrings in a Refinery29 post. I knew immediately I had to make them. Several months ago I bought two small skull charms.

Hola chicas bonitas!

Try as I might I just couldn't find a satisfactory way to incorporate them into a piece of jewelry. I even tried chain earrings, but didn't care for outcome. Little did I know it was because I was missing a large gem between the chain and the skull. Seriously, this makes all the difference. This DIY was super simple, quick, and cheap as I already had all the necessary pieces, minus the black chain. Since I used what I had my version is a little different. The stones are purple faceted oval cabs in brass oval settings, my tassels are shorter, and my chains don't have the ombre effect. I originally tried to create the look with spray paint but the paint wouldn't hold to the chain. Bust! For only spending $1 though I'm very happy with the outcome.

One view of my neighborhood

Yesterday, was really overcast here in So. Cal, but the threatening rain clouds didn't stop B and me from enjoying a great day outdoors. We hit up a small vintage flea market that I found listed in the "Weekend Events" section of our local paper and then enjoyed a pony ride and some park time. BTW the Events section of your local paper comes in handy when you have to entertain out-of-town guests, your kids are on school break, or you're just bored and want something to do.

Irvine Park

I love the thrill of finding a great vintage piece and happen live in a city with a beautiful historically preserved Old Town section, as seen in That Thing You Do, which houses over 60 antique stores making it the antique capital of So. Cal. While this might sound like heaven it is also an intimidating task that I usually don't have the time or energy to take advantage of. Also, items can be more expensive in these niche stores so I really enjoyed the chance to wander this smaller flea market in a neighboring city's Old Town district. I managed to score some great pieces for a bargain, that I plan on repurposing in my own jewelry, all in about 90 minutes before B decided she had had enough. Definitely a success for any mom shopping with a young child.

After the flea market we headed to nearby Irvine Park for a pony ride I promised B. The park occupies a large plot of land that James Irvine gifted the county in 1897, on the condition that it would remain as natural looking as possible and alcohol wouldn't be allowed on the premises(cut to today when everyone red cups the booze at picnics). It really is a beautiful place and I feel very lucky that I live somewhere where I can enjoy a modern lifestyle and still look down my street and see meadows, canyons, and hills that will never be touched by development projects. B enjoyed the pony ride, giggling the whole time, after we spent some time walking around the park. We returned home to go on a nature walk around the neighborhood, B wanted to find blossoming trees. The day ended with a delicious dinner of grilled salmon (yes we are already using our bbq) and fresh homemade strawberry pie. Overall, it was a great way to unwind and recharge for this week and I hope you all were as lucky to enjoy some time outdoors.

Friday Find: SWANclothing Garters

SWANclothing's sock and thigh high garters will put a little sizzle in your step in this Friday Find. I'm pretty sure I first found these lovely garters on The Coveted where Jennine wrote about them here, here, and here. I immediately fell in love with the comfortable lookin elastic and recycled leather design and the swan bead detail. I think anyone who has worn knee socks or thigh highs knows what a pain they are to keep in place. As a former Catholic school girl this struggle was all too common for me. Trying to pull up your knee socks as you run to class in a skirt without flashing anyone is no easy task, but it is one that I, and many of my fellow schoolmates, dealt with each day. Although, looking back I'm pretty sure some of those girls liked giving everyone a little show.

Back to the point, these garters will allow you have your cake and eat it too which would make Marie Antoinette happy seeing how she was a big fan of thigh highs and cake ;) Depending on the garter style you buy they will either be adjustable or made to your measurements ensuring a great fit that will keep everything up without the hassle of wearing a garter belt, which seems to be suffering the effects of a tarnished image anyway. I mean don't garter belts look to have been relegated to the bedroom for women outside of certain professions, and Taylor Momsen? All I know is that SWANclothing's garters manage to look sexy but innocent enough to not worry about getting propositioned by a john and they are functional. So if you love wearing thigh highs but hate the hassle that accompanies them pop on over to SWANclothing and pick yourself up a pair of garters, your thighs will thank you.

Elizabeth Taylor

I'm not one who is usually affected by the death of a celebrity but finding out that Elizabeth Taylor died this morning hit me in a different way. I don't know if it's because I'm already so emotional over the devastation in Japan and the general sense of chaos that seems to be affecting global politics right now but I feel the need mark this day with a nod to her life, talent, activism, wit and wisdom. She was a intelligent, beautiful woman, a talented actress, and vocal AIDS activist who seemed to have it all but struggled constantly to keep hold of it. Her life was a roller coaster marked with love, scandal, heartbreak, success, and passion and she seemed to accept and embrace it. Unlike many of today's starlets who feign remorse and sorrow when caught in a scandal Elizabeth, love it or hate it, did as she pleased and didn't worry about pandering to public opinion. Her focus was on her own desires, goals, and happiness and while I don't agree with some of her life choices I do greatly respect her for refusing to play to the crowd.

Jewelry for Metal Mulisha

Unless you have read my old posts you probably don't know that I have a tiny side business making jewelry, especially since I basically put it on hiatus to deal with other life issues. Anyway, I have always been drawn to artistic pursuits and projects and stumbled into jewelry making about two years ago when I was searching for a creative birthday present for my sister. I immediately took to it and started making pieces for family and friends, even setting up a shop on Etsy (currently down but will be up with new pieces in about a week). Around a year and a half ago a friend/former co-worker and currently one of my best clients, asked me if I would create some pieces for a photo shoot for Metal Mulisha's* Winter '10 lookbook. I giddily agreed and ended up creating several custom pieces. I received the catalogue a year ago ago, set about writing this post to show the pieces, had trouble loading the pics, and then promptly forgot about it. I just came across it again and decide better late than never so I'm posting it now in honor of me getting my butt back to business and in anticipation of relaunching my Etsy store.

*Metal Mulisha is one of the brands I used to work for when I was in the Action Sports Industry. If you watch the X Games, FMX specifically, at all you probably are familiar with the brand.

The Sneaker Pimp's "6 Underground" popped up on my radio the other day and immediately transported me back to jr. high. When wearing Dr. Martins and pale face make up meant you were a bad ass (it still does) and many pubescent suburban girls believed dark moody music, mostly sung by Shirley Manson, was the soundtrack to their lives. At least that's what I felt. So lace up your combat boots, put on that black velvet choker and enjoy reveling in your teenage melancholy.

Friday Find: Kelly Love

In the last few months I would say I have developed an addiction to wasting time online. I use to only go online to check email, read the news, and occasionally stalk people on Myspace/Facebook. Now a days I seem to spend hours not really accomplishing anything besides building shopping wish lists, finding DIY inspirations which I could actually do if I spent less time online (darn Catch 22), and leap frogging from blog to blog. I know this story is awesome but I promise it has a point, that being if I wasn't such an online addict I would have never stumbled across the UK photograhpy blog hivennn and thus never discovered this week's Friday Find KELLY LOVE. I immediately fell in love with the line's non-frilly femininity and retro vibe. Launched in 2008 by founder/designer Kelly Love, an Aussie ex-pat living in London, the line is a tribute to "feminism, old world glamour, and love in the purest form". I am all for feminism, glamour, and love and I am definitely for this line. Can't wait to see more from Ms. Love.

DIY Envelope Clutch

The envelope clutch is all over magazines and street style blogs this season. I first noticed the beautiful blue Celine bag and then began to see the style everywhere. I really loved this leopard print version with it's folded double pouch and black leather accents. I decided to use it as a reference to make my own. The design is straightforward, but making a two pocket version made construction a little more complicated especially since I was figuring it all out as I went along. Stick with the simple single pocket for a quick and easy project or go for the double pocket if you need/want a bigger bag. It's a great grab and go purse and the simple shape makes it the perfect DIY bag. If you can sew this is a great gift to make a fashionable friend or family member.

Supplies for Double pouch envelope clutch:

-2 14" black/brass zippers (I wanted a big bag, choose any size you want)

-sewing machine, quality thread, correct needle for fabric

-magnetic brass button purse snap (keeps two sides together)

-1/2 yd black pleather (stretches while sewing which frustrated and slowed me down a great deal, but much cheaper than leather to experiment with)

-1/2 yd furry leopard print fabric (wanted something like pony hair but settled on this)

-1/2 yd black heavy twill (lined my bag to make it sturdier)

This was a blind trial and error process so my instructions are based what worked best for me. I would suggest looking online for a pattern or professional instructions and suggestions because I have also just started sewing again after several years so my technique and knowledge are rusty. I think having another reference will make it easier to do this project.

1. Create a pattern for the bag. It is just a long rectangle and one short rectangle of the same width for the contrasting strip on the leopard fabric. Make sure to double the length on the pattern as the finished clutch will be folded in half+ seam allowances. Width should be the same length as your zipper nylon + seam allowances.

2. Cut out fabrics.

3. Attach small pleather rectangle to leopard rectangle, folding one long edge of pleather under itself and pin to the print side of leopard fabric. Sew visible seam across top of the overlay area. Line up edges of pleather and leopard topsides facing eachother. Line up a twill rectangle to the backside of the pleather and one to the backside of the leopard. Fold the tops of all 4 fabrics 1/4" down and pin one side of the first zipper between the pleather and liner and the other side between the leopard and liner. Sew zipper in.

4. Make sure all 4 rectangles' 3 open sides are lined up. Pin down the two long sides and sew stopping a 1/4" from ends.

Attached snap closure.

5. Turn bag right side out. Fold bag to look like the final product and attach the purse snaps to the pleather sides about 1" down from zipper. Turn bag inside out again.

6. Attach second zipper the same way as the first. Flip bag right side out and DONE! Your bag is complete.

*You can sew the lining in separately but I didn't know how to give directions for that.

*Add piping for some more detail.

*I actually sewed a dividing line into my lining to create two distinctive pockets but I didn't write down how I did it because I know it wasn't done correctly and it was too confusing to try to explain. I would recommend creating the two pouches so that whatever you put into the purse won't be sliding allover.

I enjoy blogging but am very sporadic with it so to keep myself on track I'm starting a weekly post called Friday Find where I will highlight a great item or designer that I've come across in my obsessive online treasure hunts. There is no rhyme or reason to what I pick other than they are dirty shiny pretty things that catch my eye and that I hope you will like too.

Today's Find is Laura Lombardi's Vintage Brass Bar Earrings. I actually stumbled across these while Christmas shopping and was immediately drawn to the statement making minimalist design. These are just one of several great pieces you can find in her Etsy shop so check it out.

Leopard Week: Friday

I'm on a roll. Second outfit post in a row! This is my last outfit post for Leopard week, tomorrow I will be posting the clutch DIY, but it is by no means the end of my sharing my love of animal prints with you.

This look I call "corporate kitten". I love this Max & Cle0 dress that I scored for $8 on deep discount at Loehmanns. The bright blue color, blouson sleeves, and key hole cut outs paired with my tan leather A/X coat make me feel like a career woman climbing the corporate ladder in the late 70s/early 80s vibe. The leopard touches are on my accessories. My heels and a little bow in my hair that you can't really see here but is highlighted in a DIY post a few days ago.

Target heels that are super comfy. I've had these for a few years and I'm amazed at how well they've lasted. I'll be bummed when they are done.

He Said She Said

The talk of the Fashion World the last few days has been focused on Galliano, his anti-semitic rantings, and his subsequent dismissal from Dior and entry into rehab. He denies making these comments and recently issued a statement about it which can be found on multiple websites. Of course, there's video evidence of a previous incident that makes it hard to believe his claims. Really knowing nothing for Galliano as a person but having seen the video I am hit by what an unhappy and bitter a man he seems to be. His words are not only ugly and hateful but harmful as people continue excuse his behavior because he is such an amazing designer. The whole thing makes me think of Roman Polanski and how so many famous people want that issue to be brushed aside because he is a great director. Unfortunately, creating great art does not excuse disgusting behavior. I hope Galliano receives the help he needs and that this incident serves as an example of how all hate speak is ugly no matter who it comes from.

Leopard Week

Leopard is Nature's camo

If you glance over the last few posts in my blog you might notice that I have an affinity for leopard print. Well, Sheila of Ephemera has declared this week Leopard week and I am all for it. Of course, I am supposed to be posting my leopard print outfit pictures but as previously noted I'm horrible at taking pics. Today, I managed to take a head shot/leopard bow tie pic on my photobooth and upload it to Twitpic. A major accomplishment in my book. I promise to have at least one more leopard themed photo up this week. I've made it my goal to get a full body shot. Failure is not an option, even if that means enlisting my Kindergartener to take the photo. In the meantime enjoy the inspirational photo.

My Favorite Oscar dresses

Like many people I love Hollywood award season fashion. I use to watch the shows just to see what everyone wore, now, thanks to the internet, I don't even have to do that. I can see every single gown, tux, suit, bodysuit with the stroke of a few keys. What a luxury it is to live in the 21st century! Don't get me wrong though, I still enjoy catching snippets of the coverage because photos don't move and sway the way Anne did when she shook her sh** in her fringe covered gown sending the fringe rippling off her body. The five year old in me immediately wished that I could be doing the same thing. Anyway, here are my favorite looks.

Jennifer Lawerence

This dress is incredibly sexy and uncomplicated. I immediately thought "Baywatch" because of the color and neckline which is not a bad thing because Baywatch lifeguards were hot and so is Jennifer.

Cate Blanchett

On the opposite end of the spectrum is Ms. Blanchett's incredibly detailed Givenchy gown. This one grew on me *barnacle pun intended;) The dress might not tickle everyone's fancy but the amazing detailing and craftsmanship cannot be denied.

Mila Kunis

Mila's dress is almost too much for my taste. Lace, fabric tails spouting from your stomach, and lilac have never been favorites of mine but I do love pretty things and this gown is very pretty.

Gwyneth Paltrow

I didn't see this look on TV. I only caught her "County Superstar" performance. Did anyone else laugh at J.Hud's inflated intro? Just me? Alright then...Let me just say I love this dress 100x more than her performance. It looks like liquid metal (it's actually a lot of silver sequins which I learned today thanks to the internet). It's shininess and fluidity are hypnotic. I want to both stare at it and pet it.

Jungle Love

Rawwr!

I had been on the lookout for nail polish appliques and finally found these ones at my local CVS. I had to get them because a) they were the only ones I had found after searching several stores and b) they were just tacky enough to be awesome. They were a little tricky to get on, but considering they were only $10 and provided enough for two sets of appliques they were a pretty good deal. They lasted about three days before they started to peel on the side and I ended up removing them around the 5th day. I think they would have lasted longer if I hadn't kept readjusting them during the application process. I'm definitely want to try them again and have my eyes on a few styles from this site. Have you tried appliques? Did you do them yourself or get them done at a salon? I'm interested to know if the professional application is worth the money.

Chicken with Boursin Mushroom Sauce

I recently stumbled across the blog Baked Bree, spied her chocolate peanut butter pie, and knew I was in serious trouble. I quickly decided that I wanted to eat whatever she was making because it all looked delicious. Lucky for me computer images are inedible, otherwise I would currently be in the hospital with a food coma. I really want to make her signature choc. pb pie but my waistline and my heart are begging me to reconsider.

While busy arguing with them over my food needs I was able to test out her Chicken w/ Boursin Mushroom Sauce for tonight's dinner. Success! It was quick, easy, and delicious and I will definitely be making it again, with a few minor tweaks.

Tell me if you've tried this before/what you think?

My Tips

-Cook chicken for less time. Mine got a little dry by the time I added the sauce. I should have been paying closer attention to how quickly it was cooking.

-Don't reduce the wine so much. The best part of this is the sauce so why reduce it to so little?

-Substitute cheese brands. While I used Boursin cheese I'm pretty sure you could just any soft garlic and herb cheese

-Feel free to add more. I added more mushrooms and cheese than what the recipe called for. The original amounts looked sparse to me so I just added more. Still, looking at Baked Bree's photos it looks like she has more cheese and mushrooms in than I did.

The Purrrfect Accessory

After finishing a recent DIY project (which I will post in the next few days) I had some small strips of scrap fabric left that I decided would be perfect to make clip on bows. I already had everything I needed and I was able to complete this project while catching up on the latest episode of Modern Family (love!). I think they turned out pretty cute and can actually be worn in a variety of ways, just use your imagination!

Clip on bows

Supplies:

-1-2 types of scrap fabric

-scissors and ruler

-2 clip on earring posts with a firm pinch (you want them to grab hold and stay put)

-hot glue gun

-needle and thread (not necessary)

-fabric glue (or sewing machine if you aren't lazy like me)

*Note: I'm horrible at taking pictures while I'm working. It's hard for me to stop focusing on my work to pick up my camera so I hope the written directions and finished pictures are enough to help you through.

Steps:

1. Take the piece of scrap fabric that is going to be the bow. Trim it into a long rectangle that is twice as long as you want your finished bow to be. It's up to you how large you want it. Mine are about an 1x3 1/2" finished.

2. Fold fabric in half length-wise. Glue two halves together with fabric glue. Press sides together and let dry.

-You can sew them together if you want. Since my fabric is furry it hides the fact that is was glued better than other fabrics.

3. Thread needle then take your fabric rectangle and pinch in the middle. Run the needle back and forth through the pinched fabric a few times to create a bow.

-You don't have to do this but I think it helps.

4. Cut a thin strip of fabric (same or different type) and with your hot glue gun wrap it tightly around the center of the bow.

5. Attach the bow to the back of the earring post with hot glue. Attaching it to the back allows for the smooth side to slip into your shoe without irritating your foot. Repeat these steps for second bow. Enjoy!

-I covered the exposed part of the earring post in a fabric as well so it would blend in with the bows.

Mama's Got a Brand New Bag

Awhile ago ...love Maegan did a post about some awesome things she found at the leather store Tandy Leather Factory. Randomly I had spent some time searching, unsuccessfully, for leather at my local fabric and craft stores so I was really excited to learn that there was a Tandy's near me. I went right away and ended up buying some lovely black leather, metal studs, and handle hardware all with the idea of making a purse. Mind you I had never worked with leather before, never made a purse, and really hadn't sewn much in the last several years, but I was optimistic and high on the fumes of animal hides. Did I also mention I'm impatient? So instead of searching out a tutorial online I decided I would teach myself. I thought a bucket bag would be simplest and still stylish so I took a bowl, traced it onto the leather to form the bottom of the bag, and cut. There was no turning back. Several days and sore fingers later this is what I had.

Not too bad. My biggest regret was not having bought a larger piece of leather. Size really does fool you. I thought I bought a piece that would give me a small/medium size bag but this is definitely small, similar to evening bag size. In fact I ended up using it as a night bag when I went to a friend's bachelorette party in Vegas.

Don't Step on My Toes! A Shoe DIY

I have a love for pyramid studs and spikes that borders on obsession. It probably is related to my love of Punk, but maybe not. I don't care, I just love that studs and spikes are currently covering all types of things, including some incredibly amazing shoes. Being bored one day I decided to create my own pair of spiked shoes at a small fraction of the price of the shoes I've been lusting after. My original idea was to cap the heel and toe in spikes, but since my spikes were so big I had to go for a really minimalistic look. If I get smaller spikes I will definitely try my original idea.

Materials

-1 pair cheap/old shoes you don't mind putting holes in

-marker/pen

-flat top screw in spikes (Pay attention to the size you buy. I wish mine were smaller)

-leather punch/something that can cut through leather

1. Use a pen/marker to mark where you want your spikes to go on your heels. You probably want to use a measuring tape to measure spacing so you can easily make the shoes identical. Not doing this lead me to punching extra holes.

2. Use leather punch to create holes make sure you are making the holes as small as your screws or smaller. Large holes will lead to limp spikes :(

3. Screw in you spikes.

*Use spikes with screws like those pictured so they will lay flat on the inside of the shoe. If the screw heads still irritate your feet you can use fabric glue and a small piece of cloth/leather to line the part of the shoe were the heads are.

4. Enjoy!

I love makeup. In school I enjoyed experimenting with colors and looks and seriously considered becoming a makeup artist. Then I entered the work force and got into the habit of doing a quick 5 minute face. While I'm pretty happy with my routine I still like to follow trends and have been really intrigued by the orange lips popping up all over. I'm more of a neutral lip girl but found this color the last time I was at Target and for $5 thought I would give it a try. Definitely brighter than my normal look but I'm liking it.

A few months ago my Mom was in Nepal to visit my Sister who was over there working with anti-trafficking organizations (yes she is the good child of the family who is currently attending law school so she can spend her life fighting slavery while I sit on my butt and blog) Anyway, my Mom brought me back these cute sandals. As soon as I put them on one of the zippers fell off. Being the nice lady she is my mom got the zipper fixed for me. I tried them on again and bam the other zipper falls off. These are just cheap little street sandals that are cute so I don't want my mom to spend any more money getting them repaired but I also don't want them to go unworn. I finally came up with a solution. I would make them into lace ups. I've been seeing a lot of corset lacing on the back of shoes so I figured this would be a fun, free, and fashionable fix for my footwear dilemma.

Here is the ridiculously easy process:

1. Cut off the zippers.

2. Mark your holes and use a leather punch to punch them out

3. Insert laces

*I suggest leather cord but I didn't have any lying around so I'm using plain black laces for the moment.

4. Enjoy!

Being unemployed I once again have a lot of free time, and while some people say this time should be used to apply to every possible job I can find, I disagree. Of course I spend some time each day searching/applying to jobs but I've done the gung ho all out affront on the job market and frankly it sucked. Now I break up my time, job search in the morning, free time in the afternoon, then playtime with my daughter after I pick her up from school. While I'm still stressed about finding a new direction in life the time balance really helps me feel a little more like I have a normal life and am not just a job searching zombie. Anyway, my free time often means craft time since I have a lot of craft/art/jewelry supplies lying around thus giving me the ability to be crafty and thrifty. Also, I find working on projects to be very therapeutic which is a big bonus right now. I'm not going to kid you or myself and say I'm some craft genius but I've been having fun with what I've been doing so I'm going to show you too, just promise not to laugh.

So I have not posted anything for awhile. The reason being I had gotten a 8-5 job and I really didn't feel like I had time to keep blogging without taking time away from my family and friends. Unfortunately, because the economy is still in the crapper, especially in California, I was laid off. That makes 3 lay offs in two years. I'm on a role, but I really wish I wasn't. Anyway, now I have time again to blog and be crafty so that's what I'll be doing to keep myself sane while I figure out what the hell I'm doing with my life. Anyway, I just wanted to say hello again and I hope you enjoy the last "unofficial" weekend of Summer. And if you have a job remember to be thankful for it, even if you think it sucks.

BCBG Sample Sale

I trekked up to Vernon today to shop at BCBG's Friends and Family Sample Sale. Oh my gosh! There were so many pretty dresses. I was overwhelmed. Now if you have ever been to a sample sale you know that you have to walk in with a game plan and the right mindset or you will be slaughtered. So after spending a half hour searching for parking and then another hour waiting in line to go in I was a little exhausted but I manned up powered through the next 2 1/2 hours to get some shopping done. The biggest mistake you can make at a sample sale is just grabbing something because it's your size. You need to look at each piece carefully inspecting it for deformities and tears because samples are notorious for having flaws (I know I used to have to work the sample sales at my old job). Also, be honest with yourself about whether you will wear it or not. Trust me, you're not really saving money if it just sits in your closet collecting dust. So anyway after much searching, grabbing, inspecting, and editing I came away with the following:

3 dresses

2 blouses

2 bathing suits

1 sweater

1 skirt

GRAND TOTAL $71

Yep, that's right only $71! If I had just purchased one of my blouses retail I would have spent more than that so although I'm exhausted and sweaty I am very happy I went. Thanks Tayler for hooking me up with the pass!

La Quinta

So I returned from the bachelorette weekend yesterday a lot more tan and a little more worse for the wear, but overall I had a great time. Days were spent eating and laying poolside. Nights were a little more productive eating and drinking and loudly making ourselves the center of attention wherever we went. We even got security called on us for being obnoxiously loud on our patio around 11:30 at night. I mean what do you expect when you get 9-11 women in their mid-twenties together in a room.

We stayed at the La Quinta Resort and Spa which was set right against the mountains. So pretty. I had never stayed in Palm Desert before but I loved it and can't wait to go back. We even lucked out with nice weather that didn't break 100 degrees!

I love the progression of faces in this shot. Once everyone discovered we were a bachelorette party there was no end to the free shots, which of course led to the downfall of several in our party.

This as productive as we got during the day. Reading gossip mags without getting print all over your oiled up body is actually really hard work.

Las chicas and me. I have known these girls since freshman year of high school and I love them as much as ever. We've been friends with the bride and groom through their whole relationship and I am so excited that in a month's time we will get to witness them getting married. Congrats M&J! I love you mucho and can't wait for Santa Barbara.

What's even cooler is that it was started almost a year ago by another 20-something Orange County girl, and you know I'm always down to promote another woman who is kicking ass and taking names in the business world. DIY Leather Studded Bangle

On a whim I bought two unfinished square wood bangles a few weeks ago and had been muling over what to do with them when inspiration suddenly hit. I have a boxes of jewelry making/art/craft supplies and rummaging through it I found a bunch of leather and immediately decided to cover one of the bangles in leather and studs. Overall it was a pretty easy project and I'm happy with how it turned out and hope you have fun making your own!

Supplies:

-wooden bangle

-leather (from Tandy's leather, thanks ...love Maegan for turning me on to them)

*obvi this isn't the leather but I wanted to give an idea of how big a piece you should start with.

-fabric glue

-craft paint

-small brass round studs

-scissors

-jewelry wire cutters

-jewelry pliers

Steps:

*I only thought about doing this post after I finished so I have no photos of the steps

1. Figure out placement of leather on bangle. There will be folds but ignore them for a second and just make sure that the bangle will be covered.

2. Start gluing the top and one side of the bangle and smooth leather down onto bangle. When you reach a corner pinch the extra leather on both sides and cut out what should be a triangle strip of leather. This will allow the leather to lay flat on the bangle while making sure you get complete coverage. Continue to do this all the way around the bangle. Trim excess leather from side. Flip bangle over, glue down third side, and trim excess leather.

*side note: you can wrap leather all the way around bangle for more finished look. I didn't because my bangle has a very narrow opening and adding the leather would have made it almost impossible to squeeze my hand through.

3. Take studs and remove prongs with wire cutters and pliers. Figure out where you want to place the studs and then glue them down. I placed my studs on the corner seams I cut to cover them up.

4. Since I didn't cover the underside of the bangle I painted it black to match the leather. I am not quite happy with the unfinished edges of my bangle but haven't figured out how to smooth them out completely. Oh well!

And there you have it. A stylish one of a kind bangle that would be perfect to rock with little cocktail dress or jeans and a tee.

Vegas Baby Vegas!!!

I finally have a friend who is getting married, so this past weekend some old friends and I decided to kidnap her and take her to Vegas for the weekend. It was amazing! I have been to Vegas once several years ago when I was not of age to do anything so this time was a completely different experience. I went with my closest friends from high school who I rarely get to see anymore because everyone is so busy with their own lives. By the time we drove up to the valet at the hotel my ear was ringing from being in a car with four other very excited females who speak at decibels similar to a rock concert. It's fine though. Who wants to have crisp hearing anyway? At the hotel we're greeted by another friend who now lives out of state. She had taken to decorating the room with paraphernalia that my mother would call crass, I instead laughed out loud. Sorry mom. The second we stepped into the room we morphed back into 16 year olds, yes go ahead shake your head, I'm embarrassed too. There was screaching, laughing, gossiping, awkward moments, dancing, and even a little cattiness, but you know what? It was all ok. Even after a few bumps and moments of tension the night turned out to be a blast. We walked(some stumbled) back to the hotel in the wee hours of the morn sweaty, dirty, and with aching feet but we were happy because we had each other. Sorry, if the cheese makes you gag but that's how I feel. A few days later as jokes become blurry and moments start to fade I still know that I will remember this trip for a long time to come and love these girls even more because friends like this are hard to find.

What did I do to you, Zac Posen?

I've been so excited about the Zac Posen line debuting at Target. I love Target and I love the designer collaborations they've been doing for the last few years so it's a win win situation. I've been waiting for months for this new line especially since the last few collections have been ho-hum. I rushed to Target today, my Target always debuts lines a day before, and excitedly grabbed about 15 pieces to try on. I practically raced to the dressing room giddy about my good fortune of finding so many things. Well, that's where my good fortune ended. So I admit I'm busty, 36DD, and usually have to go up a size or two for these designer lines, but the fit on these clothes was ridiculous. Of the 9 dress styles I tried on only two fit and that's after trying on different sizes of all the dresses! Some of them were so small that I got the largest size and without even zipping it up could feel the arm hole digging into my armpit. The bottoms I tried on were just as bad. I would normally question whether I've been gaining weight but I have made some recent purchases in my regular sizes that fit just fine. This leads me to wonder what the heck happened. I mean why are these pieces running so small? I did leave with one dress but I'm still not even sure I'll keep it and the funny thing is that of the two sizes I tried on I had to go with the smaller one because the other was gapping on the sides of my chest. Anyway, there's no point to this rant other than to say I'm really bummed at how the fit of this line turned out. There are still some really cute pieces in it but if you are a chesty girl I wouldn't bother.

5. Family Friendly

Yes, I know, I should just go throw on some mom jeans and hop in a mini van, but I can't help it. I like that we live within walking distance of several parks, playgrounds, and schools and that families really enjoy spending time outside so there are always kids for my daughter.

4. Diversity

I might live in the suburbs but it's not white bread Main Street USA. My neighbors come from all walks of life from all over the world, even B's Pre-K looks like a mini United Nations. I love that she is getting to learn about so many different cultures through her friends and is experiencing first hand the uniqueness of humankind at such an early age. It doesn't hurt that I can find a great tamale, tikka masala, or tuna roll within in a 10 minute drive either.

3. Climate

I don't just love the weather of So Cal I love the climate. I've lived on the East Coast and in Europe and no matter how much I loved the cities I could never deny I was a Cali girl at heart. How could I shun the mild, but diverse, weather and dry heat in favor of face freezing wind and clothes soaking humidity? It's impossible.

2. Natural Beauty

I don't particularly find OC architecturally beautiful. There are definitely some amazing buildings hidden amongst the jumble of sub-divisions and boring tract housing but they are few and far between. This doesn't matter though because the natural beauty of the area constantly blows me away. Spring is my favorite season here because thousands of wild flowers are in bloom and the hills and canyons are covered in hundreds of shades of green, purple, pink, yellow, and orange. Wouldn't it be great if I actually included an image of this instead of just talked about it? I've made the mental note to take pics of the flowers before they die, oh, about 100 times but because I'm camera repellent I never remember to actually take my camera out of my house to accomplish this. Really someone call me as I'm walking out the door so I can finally do this!

1. Location, Location, Location

You really can't beat the prime location of the OC. An hour to LA, an hour to SD, an hour to the mountains, 40 minutes to the desert, and 20 minutes to the beach. I live in the suburbs but they edge canyons and meadows. I can be in the middle of it all or as far removed as possible in the blink of an eye. I really am very blessed to live in such a great area.
